Under the North Star For the first time since Finland´s Mika Waltari achieved best-seller status in the U.S. during 1950s with historical novels such as Sinuhe the Egyptian, a Finnish novel deserving of international recognition emerges. Väinö Linna´s classic, monumental trilogy, Under the North Star (Täällä Pohjantähden alla), appears only now in English, elegantly translated by Richard Impola.Part one of this historic work, which encompasses Finnish history from the 1880s to the 1950s. depicts the turn of the 20th century (1884-1907). It gives a voice to hitherto silent actors on the stage of history as it offers a comprehensive account of the social and economic realities reflected in the hopes, dreams, and experiences of Jussi ans Alma Koskela and their children in the rural village of Pentti+s Corners in south central Finland. Under the North Star 3 RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is the third installment of Linna´s trilogy Under the North Star. It depicts the experiences of the Koskela family during the something turbulent first decades of Finland´s independence. Linna´s exceptionally captivating style of writing and psychological understanding of the interaction between individual feelings and social order is here more refined than ever. It offers a detailed account of attitudes toward the social reforms, which ultimately came about as a consequence of the Civil War of 1918. The nation advances on its way toward reconciliation. Vilho Koskela, Jussi and Alma Koskela´s grandson, lives to become on of the leading heroes of Väinö Linna´s other Finnish masterpiece The Unknown Soldier. The English translation by Richard Impola maintains the same high standard that characterizes parts one and two of the trilogy. (Written by Väinö Linna.)
