Uutena Torontossa ?
Vapaa Sana on riippumaton viikkosanomalehti, joka ilmestyy kerran viikossa Torontossa. Lehden nimi periytyy 1930-luvulta. Nimi johtaa joskus lehteä tuntemattoman pitämään Vapaata Sanaa ns hengellisenä lehtenä. Sitä se ei kuitenkaan ole. Näillä
sivuilla tarjoamme poimintoja sisällöstä,
emme koko aineistoa. Vapaa Sana on tilauspohjainen lehti. Vuosikerta maksaa
Kanadassa 100 dollaria ja GST-veron, nopeammin kirjepostina 150 dollaria.Tilaukset

Megan Leslie
The first Canadian Member of Parliament of Finnish extraction since the days of Judy Erola, Megan Leslie (NDP) represents Halifax, but comes originally from Kirkland Lake. "Kanadansuomalaisuus sai uudet kasvot", wrote Vapaa Sana in its news item. During her studies Megan Leslie has spent a year in Tampere. Lionel Ketola
A brave man with a Finnish background in Thunder Bay was ordained as a Lutheran priest much against the will of his church. Ketola got national media attention being the first openly gay Lutheran priest. The church (ELCIC) later hit his congregation, the Holy Cross in Newmarket, with penalties. Vapaa Sana noted that in the early decades of the 1900s "Finlanders" fought for equality in Canada on the labor scene.,and that Ketola could well be seen also as a continuation of that tradition. Andrea Hansen and Hans Myrskog
Not seen in Finnish events for some time Andrea Hansen made a "come back" in the magnificent Final Concert of the FinnJoy. And appeared again in the FinnJoy Acknowledgement of Volunteers Party in October. Andrea Hansen is one of the three Finnish Canadians who have received the Order of Canada, the others being the veteran editor of this newspaper Reynold Pehkonen, and trade union activist Paul SIren. At a time when the age of suurjuhlat, many say, is over, Hans "Hanski" strengthened the Nordic connection and motivated volunteers, both seasoned and new. Besides being a success with the public, the event also ended in the black. Veli Niinimaa
Veli Niinimaa, of Calgary, is the deputy to the vice chair of the Ulkosuomalaisparlamentti in Canada. During 2009 he contributed decisively to the widening of the membership of the Finnish Expatriate Parliament in Canada. Seen here on arrival in Thunder Bat, he has been the real "Stahanovian" in promoting the benefits of being a member. And during 2008 the USP (FEP) received applications from such important organizations as the Finnish Cultural Club in Calgary and the Finnish Credit Union (Toronto). Earlier Niinimaa, along with vice-chairman Niilo Saari, arranged a road show for the West. And there is more to come in 2009.
