UUTENA TORONTOSSA?
Mitä kaupungin perinteinen suomalaiskenttä voi tarjota tulokkaalle?

Now if only they were all Vapaa Sana subscribers...

The lone Celtic fan in the joint looked on in puzzled bemusement as his local watering hole slowly transformed from its usual empty self into a sea of blue and white. Little did he know that he was being engulfed by the mushrooming phe-nomenom known as finn-ophile pubnite.
Ok, so it's not exactly a phenomenom, but the second edition of this agen-da free evening of social networking did draw just shy of 100 to a Danforth saloon last Thursday evening.
Now drawing 100 people to any event in this great metropolis of choices is a commendable feat in and of itself. Drawing them solely on the commonality of their Finnishness - or some derivative thereof - is a down-right accomplishment.
Now I don't mean to belabour the point here at all. Rather, I am simply trying to draw you, the reader, to the same conclusion that I there is something very peculiar community. A genuine blithness.seems to be a positive vibe growing at the deepest of grassroots levels, that of
the pure nonchalance of
unadulterated friendship.
No strings, no agendas, no solicitations. Perhaps THIS is the key.
Perhaps these future torch bearers, so desperately sought by the 'established' organizations, don't want to be suffocated by the miasma of "traditional Finnishness". Perhaps they want to create their own, fresh traditions.
Now, speaking of soliciting, if only we could get them to subscribe...

Mr. X. This young lad did not want his name used for fear of reprisal from his mother who is a VS subscriber. Not to worry, Mom, he was on his best behaviour all night.
